Home Prep Day 2: Why deep cleaning and decluttering matter more than you think
One of the biggest mistakes sellers make is underestimating how much clean and clear impacts buyer perception.
That’s why Day 2 of my Home Prep series focuses on deep cleaning and decluttering — two steps that consistently move the needle.
Start With a Professional Deep Clean
A professionally cleaned home doesn’t just look better — it feels better.
Clean kitchens, bathrooms, windows, and floors signal care, pride of ownership, and move-in readiness. Buyers notice immediately.
Declutter and Depersonalize
This step is about helping buyers imagine themselves in the home.
That means:
-
Removing family photos and personal items
-
Clearing visual distractions
-
Letting the space — not your belongings — be the focus
- If you are left with too many nail holes, I have excellent handymen that I can refer
An added bonus? You’re already packing.
Where to Begin
Many sellers ask where to start. My advice:
-
Neatly pack and store items in the garage
-
Reduce clothing and shoes in closets that you won't need for the next few weeks
-
Declutter linen closets
-
Start using up pantry items AKA no Costco trips until you're in your new home LOL
A Personalized Approach Matters
Every home is different. Some need more, some need less. That’s why prep is never one-size-fits-all.
My role is to guide homeowners through what matters most for their specific property — with clarity, not overwhelm.
